Objectives

The key objective of ENGINE is to help SMEs become more energy efficient either in production, administration or logistics. A further aim is to build regional capacity  to guarantee SMEs get the maximum support in pursuing this goal.

 

The objectives are to:

  • Motivate and address SMEs to implement energy efficiency measures
  • Promote innovative energy services and financing concepts
  • Train energy auditors and build up expert pools
  • Accelerate market introduction of energy services in SMEs
  • Communicate energy efficiency to relevant decison makers and stakeholders
  • Disseminate and transfer successful concepts and measures

What is an SME?

ENGINE refers to the official definition for SMEs adopted by the European Commission in January 2005. In principle, this definition states that "micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are made up of enterprises which employ fewer than 250 persons and which have an annual turnover not exceeding EUR 50 million and/or annual balance sheet total not exceeding EUR 43 million" C (2003) 1422
